I like the thought of having a "technical Tip section in the WEB page. I
am working on:
-
A hoist lift for the C-18 (Draft here included)
-
Electronic Equipment installation (Eric sent me information on this)
-
How to install the sail boat optional running lights on the mast (I have
a right up from a friend)
-
A good way to install the anchor and attach it to the boat (not yet
working)
The problem I am trying to solve is trailor launch of the C-18.
Ramp launch of the C-18 seems difficult without the proper trailer. I have a trailer but it is a quick pick up to store the boat during the
winter. I will contact the trailer company advertised in the Mainsheet for a description, cost and part number of a trailer that will easily
launch the C-18. For the present I am working on using the built in lift point in my boat.
The marina I have the boat in has "do it your self" 1 ton hoists
available. I had a choice to make up a sling or use the lift point rod already in the boat. I went the lift point first because it was more
cost effective.
Draft Technical Tip
The lift point is located in the keel just aft of the battery
compartment. One can access the point through the same cover that is over the battery in the deck just forward of the ice chest.
I put a call into Catalina Customer and Technical Center and they confirmed the use of the lift point. They also sent me a copy of a
Capri-18 to 22 Lift Rod drawing. The drawing shows a picture of a 1" diameter Rod by 4 feet long with a male thread 1"-8 on each end. One end
has a coupling with female 1"-8 thread on each end. This attaches to the
rod and the lift point in the boat. The other end you screw on a 1'-8 thread Eye Nut. I am still working on where to purchase the material and
I am marking up the drawing to indicate type of material. Right now I am thinking that the entire lift rod should be low enough to leave it in
place when returning the boat to the trailer. this may also be true when you are doing a day sail for a few hours. What I do not know, yet, is
will the attached rod be a problem underway? I expect to wrap up the purchase early next week. I will make a trip to the marina to check out
the installation. Given that the weather does not get cold in Northern VA before January I am hoping to launch the boat and do some sailing to
further check out the lift rod.
This may make a good addition to the WEB site. I will leave it up to you. The final draft will have the procedure and drawing.
